3 Days Kenya Birding Trip

The trip will cover Nairobi National Park-Magadi Road-Gatamaiyu Forest

Day 1Nairobi National Park,

Oldest Park in Kenya over 60 years old and only 10km from the Capital City, with a size of 117kmsq , 1500 to 1700 metres above  sea level, More than 500 Bird species have been recorded in the park, The Park is has many different Habitats, each habitat contains various species of Birds, habitats are  as follows;( a)Acacia dominated woodland,Riverine& Scrub ,(b)Dams, Rivers and Wetlands,(c) Evergreen Forest (d)Gorges (e)Open Grasslands, The Park has four of the Big Five, Also the Herbivores have their own migration to plains adjacent to the Park. Checklist: Masaai Ostrich, Helmeted Guineafowl,Coqui Francolin, Harlequin Quail , White faced Whistling Duck, Spur winged Goose, Pygmy Falcon, Lanner Falcon, White backed,Ruppell’s,Egyptian,Lappet faced Vultures,Bateleur,Tawny Eagle, Martial, Long crested, Crowned Eagles,Kori,White bellied, Black bellied,Hartlaub’s Bustards, African Finfoot, Great Painted Snipe, Yellow throated Sandgrouse, Namaqua Dove, African Green Pigeon,Hartlaub’s Turaco, Jacobin & Levaillant’s  Cuckoos, Spotted Eagle OwlDinner/Overnight Wildebeest Camp

 

Day 2Magadi Road- area with an excess of 500 Bird species.

There are numerous productive stop- overs along this road

 Start birding at Corner Baridi, which literally translate to a cold bend, here look for Short tailed, Lark, Grassland pipit, Tawny Eagle flying over the Valley down low, visiting Golden winged Sunbirds on the Leonotis flower s, Abyssinian black Wheatear, further down on the Euclea Bushes keep an eye for the Lynes’s  Cisticola, driving another  20 minutes will bring you to Icross where the list may include the following species: Southern Grosbeak Canary, Banded Parisoma calling on top of Mellifera Acacia, Ashy Cisticola ,Rosy patched Bush shrike, Mouse coloured Penduline Tit,Black chested Snake Eagle, Fawn coloured Lark, African Grey Flycatcher,d’Arnaurd’s Barbet, Another stop at the River Bridge will yield : Little Bee-eater, Yellow bellied Eremomela, Eastern Violet backed Sunbird, White-bellied  Canary, Blue naped Mousebird, Laughing  Dove, Further ahead at the Watering point, Spot flanked Barbet will serenely call at top of a nearby Acacia Tree, plains on both sides of the Road are good habitats for two Bustards ;Crested and Kori, Gerenuk frequent these stretch of the road   The Sun may be now turning hot, option being;

driving straight to Olorgesaile pre historic site, where after having picnic will descend down to the River Bed, the acacia trees provide  a variety of bird parties, Brown-headed Tchagra, Spotted Morning Thrush, African Silverbill, Slate coloured Boubou,Von der Decken’s Hornbill, Black throated Barbet, Yellow spotted Petronia, Speckled fronted Weaver, Beautiful& Hunter’s  Sunbirds, Abyssinian Scimitarbill, Black necked Weaver ,Nubian, Cardinal Woodpeckers ,Grey Wren  Warbler, Green winged Pytillia, Dinner/Overnight Wildebeest Camp

Day 3: Gatamaiyu Forest-One of the Forest blocks of the larger Kereita Forest, Extension of Aberdares

Two hours from Nairobi, passing through vast plantations of Tea, Common   Stonechat will  welcome you  singing on top of the Tea Bushes ,Inside  the Forest  Bird species expected: Rofous chested Sparrowhawk, Hunter’s Cisticola(East Africa Endemic) Lemon Dove, Cinnamon bracken Warbler, Grey headed Negrofinch, Brown chested Alethe, Scaly Francolin, Olive Pigeon, White-tailed crested Flycatcher, Mountain  yellow Warbler, Abyssinian Crimsonwing, Crowned Eagle, Crowned Hornbill, African Hill Babbler, Bar tailed Trogon, Brown capped Weaver, Grey ,Black throated, Black collared and Chestnut Apalises,White headed Woodhoopoe,Grey Cuckooshrike, Black fronted Bushshrike,Fine banded Woodpecker,
